Mauritius is a popular destination for big game fishing and has won world-fishing records several times over. Every year, the Blue Marlin World Cup is held here. The peak season runs from November to April and species such as blue and black marlins, sharks (blue sharks, hammerhead sharks, tiger shark, and basking sharks), barracudas, tuna, sailfish and sea breams abound in the open seas.
The best fishing spots are located in the north, as well as in the west and south west of the coast, notably in Rivière Noire or in Morne Brabant.
The island has a range of fishing clubs and some hotels have their own boats.
To note: Anything caught remains the property of the owners of the boat. However, you can buy the catch to cook it and why not stuff it by way of a trophy. The price of the boat trip varies according to the size of the boat and the duration of the outing (full day or half day). The prices vary from Rs 7000 for a half day to about Rs 12 000 for a full day.
