Like elsewhere in the world, the Mauritian cinema industry is facing some difficulties due to film piracy. Since pirated films (in VCD or DVD format) are sold at a derisory price (1.22€ per film) all across the country, it is obvious that the cinemas are experiencing a fall in audience numbers, reveal the owners.
The films mainly come from western productions (United States and to a less extent, France) and from Bollywood, which is the equivalent of Hollywood in India.
Most of the films screened in the local cinemas are in French and rarely in English. Apart from the American and European films, lots of films come from Bollywood. They are screened in Hindi and often have English subtitles.
The prices vary from Rs 80 to Rs150.
