The discreet charm of the Rochester Falls

Une cascade haute de 10 mètresIts rumbling noises and its height easily impress the visitor.  With rock faces mysteriously sculpted by nature, this site emits a certain serenity that tempts one to have a break and to relax.

On the way to the south, between the town of Souillac and Saint-Aubin, there are handcrafted road signs that indicate the way to Rochester Falls.  This gorgeous waterfall is nestled at the far end of a secluded track among the sugar cane fields.  Situated off the beaten track, this waterfall discreetly unveils its charm behind dense bushes. About ten meters, it is not hostile.  In fact, the rumbling of its waters is more pleasant than imposing.

A few people standing near the fruit stalls put on an unusual show.  They do a series of dives from the top of the waterfalls for about a hundred rupees.  It is not forbidden to swim in the small transparent waters at the foot of the waterfall.  A few visitors venture to the top of the falls in order to get a few snaps from there.  However, it is strongly required to be careful, as the moss-covered rocks are slippery.

The view is outstanding.  The rock faces of the cliff are formed from mysterious rock structures that look like rectangular columns, such as pipe organs or a staircase.  They form a natural sculpture, carved within a hard rock, with angles frayed over time.   This does not dissuade the divers from performing their stunts under the flashes of the tourists' cameras.  Afterwards, the acrobats along with their associates persuade the visitors to buy a few souvenirs - such as a classical necklace that can be found in all Mauritian shops - or some fruit.

Structure mysterieuse de la paroiThe spot is peaceful.  Although it is fairly popular, it is not as crowded as the other natural sites.  There is no official operator in the vicinity.  The outing is free.  The road that leads there passes through small suburbs.  It is a tarmac track.  One must be careful in the event of rain, as the parking area, about ten meters from the waterfall, is at the far end of a short but steep slope.

The track leading down to the water is lined with a few banana trees.   Intertwined mango and litchi trees provide shade from the sun.  The visitors can sprawl on the benches placed under the shade of the old trees, whilst admiring the charm of Rochester Falls.
