Ayurveda: physical and mental well being

suryaAbsolutely unique in Mauritius, Surya Spa proposes treatments and massages based on the ayurvedic practices. It is a philosophy that comes from Kerala, a region in the south of India.

A hushed atmosphere, warm colours, background music and scented incense... the Surya spa, specialised in the ayurvedic massage, open India's doors to us. Pleasure and well being are the key words of the institution. Whispers can be heard along the corridor. Whilst we were waiting and sitting in floor-level armchairs in the main room, a receptionist offers us a citronella infusion.

She then quickly returns with a questionnaire, which we carefully fill in. From the shape and the colour of our eyes to our interpretation of a hostile climate and the smell of our sweat...The aim of all these questions is to determine our respective "Dosha", the composition of our mood or people's differing compositions. There are three types of Doshas in the Ayurveda philosophy: the Vata (air), the Pitta (fire) and the Kapha (water).

It is important to determine each one of them before starting any treatments because each Dosha uses specific natural products.
Three therapists from Kerala, a region in the south of India, work at Surya. It is there, that Ayurveda was born.

They provide particular treatments such as the Dhara that consists of gently pouring essential oils onto the forehead. There is also the Points Marma, that is stimulated in order to ease the flux of energy and blood circulation.

A full body massage

aryurvédiqueThe ayurvedic massage aims to allay stress and fatigue. It helps the body and the mind to relax in order that one's sleep may be productive and to improve the concentration of the mind.

Its main virtues are combined together in the Abhyanga massage.

This particular massage is carried out in a cubicle with subdued lighting and Indian music that contribute to the establishment's calmness and its sense of serenity.

Whilst one is lying face down and completely naked, except for a piece of cloth tied around the waist, the masseuse starts the Abhyanga massage on both legs before gradually leading up to the head. One then lies on one's back for the continuation of the massage.

One's mind gets carried away and each and every muscle relaxes under the pressure of these masterful fingers.
After the session, showers and deckchairs are available in order to allow one to fully enjoy this moment of physical bliss.

Ayurveda, an art of living

The Ayurveda is the "knowledge of life."  A deep and spiritual knowledge, inherited from ancient India and more precisely, from the Kerala region.  It's a philosophy and an art of living.  In this regard, it gives useful advice in order to make one feel better about oneself and with others.  For instance: "if every morning, as soon as one wakes up, one doesn't feel like starting ones day with a smile, this means that something isn't right, that there is an imbalance or a dysfunction within oneself.  Ayurveda teaches one how to balance ones physical, vital, mental, psychic and spiritual energies in order to feel good and to develop.

Determinating ones constitution

According to Ayurveda, it's the person who needs to be treated and not the illness.  The ayurvedic doctor may treat two people with the same symptoms differently.  The constitution of a person is difficult to determine because most humans consist of several doshas of which the proportions vary according to external factors (climate, food...).
