A reflection of society, the weekend's nights reflect the peaceful habits of the inhabitants of Grand Bay. They get together in family or friends in a shopping mall far from the touristy areas.
Martine lives in Beau Bassin. Along with her friends, they travel about thirty kilometers to spend their weekend in Grand Bay along the famous north coast of the island. They rented a "bungalow"- on the waterfront in this highly touristy site.
Yet in the evening, it's in a shopping mall at the edge of a trendy area that Martine and her friends meet. The supermarket on the corner is perfect for shopping: sodas, snacks and of course some basic utensils. Anything is available to spend a weekend at a reasonable price for the young Mauritians.
Because 500 meters away from here, the restaurants and shops with twinkling lights along the Sunset Boulevard are aimed at the tourists. At least that is what their price list seems to indicate which is well above the normal, out of the budget of the inhabitants. However, the prices do not seem to bother the tourists who are delighted by the beautiful spots and especially about the electric atmosphere that prevails.
The atmosphere is equally lively at the mall. With the colourful lights, the casino Ti Vegas, the game park Funworld and the bumper cars brighten up the place. The residents converge towards the spacious parking lots of the mall.
Young people crammed in sport cars strut about the steering wheel of their sumptuously customized fast cars, revving their engines to impress the crowd.
Others are more discreet - couples - are seated in the food court. They sip their drinks whilst enjoying the specialties of the "fast food" available on the premises.
The girls prefer to wander in the souvenir shops to find trendy and cheap accessories or even somewhat wonderful t-shirts and dresses at an affordable price.
The youngest ones are busy having fun in the bumper cars under the watchful eyes of their parents. The electronic games in Funworld also attract the young ones and kids alike while the "games" at Ti Vegas are only for adults. As its name implies, the casino is like a "mini" (Las) Vegas.
Thus, for the inhabitants of Grand Bay and its surroundings, going to the mall is a family activity. It's an opportunity for many people to make their weekly shopping at the supermarket. Many of them, kids and adults alike voluntarily linger on the spots to socialize before going back home.
For Martine and her friends, the supermarket and the snacks are financially beneficial. But even if the evening spent at the mall is not boring, it is time to join the other side of the area for a totally different atmosphere: the crazy nights of Grand Bay where tourists and locals mingle together. Those of night clubs!
