BD Maucicienne

The Mauritian comic book festival was an opportunity to meet the celebrities and rising stars of the comic world.  The public and in particular real enthusiasts were there.  The festival itself is part of the cultural landscape of the country and has developed into a tradition.

There was an unusual crowd in Caudan during the Mauritian comic book festival, "Il'en bulles." Cartoon lovers invaded the area in order to meet the writers who took part in this event.

Local and international, famous or lesser known writers, kindly signed autographs.  Their stands were crammed full with an amazed public. Comic book lovers easily found their way around.  They came especially for the occasion and to meet their idols.

Names such as Titane, Jean-Denis Pendanx , Jacques Ferrandez, Michel Faure, Lucien Rollin, Barly Baruti, Tembo Cash, Laval Ng, Serge Huo Chao Si, Thierry Permal and others, mean a lot to them and represent an inaccessible dream that was attainable thanks to this festival.  These are the stars of the comic books.

Some of the visitors owned the works of these artists that are indeed available in local libraries.  It was an opportunity to personalise ones books with dedications.  Others were tourists or passers-by, attracted by the emanation of the talents that emerged from the stands.

The brush glided over the paper. Some strokes were born and then assembled.  And an image was formed.  As well as, of course, dedicacesthe small signature that renders the piece of work more valuable.  From table to table, the fans collected autographs.

A small gallery and a small library were set up near the stands, from where the visitors could admire the authentic pages, among which there was a mind-blowing extract, signed by Jean-denis Pendanx.  It was an acrylic gem measuring around 40x60cm, portraying the people of Sahara.

Moreover, "Il'en bulles" revealed hidden talents among the public.  In the wake of the event, the Alliance Française of Mauritius, initiator of the festival organised and awarded the winners of a comic book competition.

Other young people brought along their own comic books in order to subject them to the professionals' critical views.  It's in this convivial atmosphere that this event took place.

dessinateur de presseIt was the third edition of the festival.  It first started in 2003 and is held every two years.  According to the regular visitors, "Il'en bulles" is gradually becoming part of the cultural landscape of the country and has developed into a tradition.

Eighteen cartoonists from metropolitan France, Congo, Réunion Island, Madagascar and of course, Mauritius animated this get together.  This year, the festival opened its doors further and allowed journalistic artists to join in with the participation of four cartoonists from the local press.

The festival lasted from 30th November to 1st December.  When the time came to draw the curtains, the organisers had certainly not failed to excite the public about the next festival...in 2009.
