On the way to the north, in Beau-Plan (Pamplemousses), lies a museum that provides us with an insight into the history of sugar cane. You will be amazed right from the entrance, from where you'll be redirected towards a journey in the past leading from the creation of Mauritius to the arrival of man along its coastline.
An incredible historical research work portrays the era of colonisation, the treatment of the black population, slavery and the arrival of the labourers, etc. The main theme is based on the different steps of the sugar cane process.
All the steps are featured, from the crushing to the refining, the evaporation, the steaming, the crystallising and the drying. Awesome discoveries such as steamers, evaporators and notably the know-how of the culture and the array of sugar cane are also depicted.
A nice spot is reserved for children. An amphitheatre is at their disposal to help them learn about the history of the sugar cane. The small train, "Chaland" whistles when the correct answer is given for a game.
This adventure is worth a visit.
