Salaam Bombay: dining like the kings

Manger a l`indienneSalaam Bombay, one of the best if not the best authentic Indian restaurant in Mauritius, holds a solid reputation for itself.  Situated in Moka, in the heart of the island, this restaurant specialised in Moghalai cuisine.

Having found its’ inspiration from the gastronomy of the moghol kings, the particularly colourful cuisine is the result of a perfect match of carefully chosen and measured spices and a traditional know-how.  Salaam Bombay gives one the opportunity to enjoy the art of majestic cooking.

There is no need to be a maharaja or an Indian prince in order to taste royal dishes.  You simply needs to head to Salaam Bombay.  As you step across the threshold, soft Indian music will immediately enchant you: a made in India atmosphere.  It is up to you whether you prefer to be in the dining room or the large conservatory.  The salmon pink walls covered with Indian portraits and the soft lighting give the dining room a luxury feeling.  Our choice is made.

Drinks are served to you almost as soon as you are seated: a basket of papar, fine and crispy small dry biscuits, a mint sauce and a mixture of spiced fruit and vegetables.  Be careful not to confuse yourself between spiced and spicy.  The relaxing setting makes one want to taste everything.

Du vin rougeIn the conservatory, two young girls, Jenny and Jessica, enjoy a fizzy drink over a chat.  Opposite them, a nargileh and a taanpoora, Indian string instruments, complete the décor that is already made up of magnificent golden chandeliers.  After a quick look at the drinks list, Sunil suggests that we try his Salaam Bombay cocktail, a delicious exotic fruit drink mixed together with various fruit cordials to make up a multi-coloured three layered drink.

The drinks list is long.  There is the ever-present lassi as well as beer, agricultural rum, Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhone wines and white wines.  Prices vary between 60 and 950 rupees.  However, the specials menu remains the most impressive element with its’ tandoori-grilled crayfish.

When the food arrives, Sunil makes up a mosaic on the table with a yellowish chicken curry, a creamy soup with a variety of five different dried pulses, fried rice, an Indian salad and the roti, an Indian bread, all beautifully served in copper dishes called Karahi. This truly delicious display is prepared with spices that are imported from India and ground on the premises. Added to these spices is the expertise of the Indian chef, Om Prakash. There is a need for secrecy concerning this authentic Indian cuisine.
