BIENVENUE DANS LA COMMUNE DE : SALAZIE

Quite often covered with fog and mist, Salazie is the greenest and the smallest of the three calderas. Along the way, numerous breathtaking waterfalls plummet down gorges and cliffs, such as the “pisse en l’air” waterfall. Among the three calderas, Salazie is the most accessible one being only 20 minutes from Saint André. Bananas, peaches, medlar, citrus fruits, and chayotes are cultivated in this caldera. Commonly known as “Cristophine” in metropolitan France, the chayote is the symbol of Salazie. The Cirque de Salazie is comprised of small villages such as Salazie, Hell-Bourg, Mare à Vieille Place and Grand Ilet.

Hell-Bourg and Grand Ilet
15 Réunion Island villages belonging to 12 communes hold the “Village Créole” label. This label is a sign of authenticity, the sense of welcome and the respect for traditions and heritage. This label is not “static”: following a charter, all villages commit themselves to making regular progress regarding the different criteria.
